ENC 2135-13:Genre, Research, and Context

     In chapter nine the topic of revising your work is addressed. The importance of revising your first draft is stressed a lot in this chapter. Both reviewing your own work and having another peer review your work is a good way of revising your ideas. Although I do not typically like others revising my work, I find having others read your work and sharing what they think could be improved is very helpful. If I revise my own work I am not as likely to make as many changes as compared to a new set of eyes on my paper. The author of this chapter also says that having questions to ask your peer reviewer can be helpful as well. I had not thought about this before, usually I would just let the person go ahead and review my work without saying anything. This is a strategy that I will try in the future so that I can have the person reviewing my paper look at specific areas. Overall, the chapter was very helpful in providing new ways to have your paper revised.

     Chapter 9 discusses how impactful peer review can be to your writing.   I think peer review is a good way to get feedback on your work.   It can also be beneficial because if someone else reads your work they could catch small mistakes that you as the writer missed because you are so familiar with the writing.   I’m conflicted though because sometimes I don’t trust a peer’s ideas as much as my own.   But just having them read over if for grammatical and spelling errors never hurts.   In the past, I’ve only really had my parents review my writing.      I liked reading the examples of questions to ask peers who would edit your writing.   I feel like I might use this in the future to help me improve my writing.   I also think I will be more likely now to have peers review my writing before I turn it in.

This chapter was all about the power of peer review when writing. This chapter showed that peer review can help enhance your writing. By having others read over your work, you may find that they catch on to mistakes that you may not have seen and they also may help you find areas that you may have struggled with, whether through lack or detail or, in some cases, too much detail that it doesn't make sense. I personally like the fact of peer review because I like having others read my work because sometimes, I just type what I feel and it doesn't make sense. On the other hand, sometimes I don't like peer review because, there are some papers that I really don't feel confident, and when my name is on it, I feel like people are judging me based on my writing. I don't mind when my paper doesn't have my name on it because no one knows who wrote it and they can't be biased in their response. In this chapter, it is emphasized that peer reviewing can be a great tool in a writers belt.  When writing, the author may not notice slight mistakes, and/or details, that are needed to understand the point he or she is getting across.  This is where peer reviewing can definitely come in handy.  Peer reviewing can also possibly add a different point of view to a story, which can be extremely beneficial to the author's story, article, etc.  Since the first draft is mainly just word vomit, peer reviewing can really help you to organize your paper.  I really agreed and followed along with this chapter because last year during my ENC 1101 class, all we did was talk about peer reviewing and the importance of it.  Overall, this chapter was very focused on the fact that peer reviewing is an important step of the editing process in many ways than just one. 

In chapter nine, the author emphasizes the importance of peer review and how it can improve your writing piece. I agree that peer review can help in finalizing a writing piece because there are times where I do not know what else I can add or revise in my writing. In my entire writing career, however, I have hated peer review because it is uncomfortable for me to let my fellow peer read my writing. When another student reads my work, I feel like they might not understand the point I am trying to make, and that may result in confusion for the reader. I also do not enjoy reviewing another person’s work because I don’t know what I should revise or critique. So, I understand that peer review is important to all writing, put peer review has not been my personal favorite in the writing process. I am only comfortable with my teacher or parents reviewing my work, but I am trying to have an open mind with allowing others to read and revise my writing.

I think this chapter really emphasizing on the advantages of peer review. However, I have never been a fan of it. I personally hate when people read my writing. I also never know how to revise other people’s work because I am not sure what kind of feedback they are looking for. In high school, whenever we would peer edit, I would only look for grammatical errors. I think this chapter is especially helpful by the way it gives examples of what questions to ask the people responding to your draft. I also like how it gives the example of Gwen Ganow and her drafting. After every revision, she made a “revision list”. I am going to try to make lists like this after my drafts because it makes a person think about what impact they want to leave on their audience. After reading this chapter, I think I am going to try to have my papers reread by my peers.           Reading Chapter 9 after already doing a revising on the first draft of my essay and getting ready to have a peer review made me able to relate to the chapter greatly. I agree very much with what was said at the beginning of the chapter. For example, when it describes the first draft to be getting ideas out of your head and the essay normally having gaps in development or purpose. I relate that directly to my first draft, I did not have my audience or purpose of my essay clearly established throughout the essay yet, I left it at more what connections I saw in the adaptions. But after having the conference, I was able to take the comments and suggestions and elaborate on what I wanted my essay to portray. Different than in the chapter where she had someone read it because it might be not as objective, I found getting someone to review my essay in which I’m comparing a movie and a fairy tale very helpful because I was able to see where I left details from...
