CH.1

This post is written in response to Ch.1 of The Bedford Book of Genres

Individual involvement
Initially, I found this article rather lethargic, however, through deeper immersion, I gained an understanding of the diversity that genres can create towards the intent of the writing piece. I have never closely looked at the possible approaches I can take towards writing about a certain topic. From the article, I feel greater capability to decide which genre convention suits my intentions when writing about a topic. During my years in Highschool, the details of genres were never brought to my attention. Without any knowledge on this topic, I was unable to capitalize upon situations that would have been strengthened with a greater understanding genres and how they are used effectively. In Highschool, I was told to follow a very structured outline when it came to writing essays, doing exactly as the outline instructed (which was created by the teacher), in order to achieve the highest possible grade. The thought of which type of genre(s) would benefit my writing the most never crossed my mind. I believe this is so because I never thought about the impact that the genre can have on the composition. Although the impact is understood on the basic levels, understanding the reason why the specific type of genre(s) creates the tone of the composition can lead to a better understanding and analyzation of the author's work.

Impacts on Composing
I feel that understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a certain type of genre helps strengthen the author's message and purpose for writing in the first place. Understanding the purpose of the author's writing can lead to a better understanding of rhetoric devices used within the piece. Depending on the type of composition, the devices used have a greater impact on the development of the writing when viewed from different angles. For example, if a an author was composing a historical paper, understanding that he/she is using an ethos rhetorical appeal would improve the underlying message of any metaphors or symbolism used within the article.

  2. I agree with you that rhetoric devices make an impact on writing. I have never considered different audiences in my writing, but if I used these devices I would have been able to communicate to my more effectively.

  3. I also never thought about the different genres that could have improved my writing during high school. Its was something that I found very interesting while reading this chapter because it is a basic concept that I have never really been taught in high school.

  4. The comment regarding the importance in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a certain genre is one I can very much agree with. I feel as though some genres may work well in conveying one message, while others may not.

  5. I agree with your statement about having to follow a structured outline, because I had to do the same in my high school. I also agree with your view that having a better understanding of genre can enable the author to portray his or her purpose more clearly.

  6. Hi Garret
Your writing is very interesting and your word choice is quite curious. I am happy that the chapter helped you realize that you can pick the manner in which you will write. Also, it's good to hear that you noticed that in your past you've only written to please your audience - teachers - and not yourself. Can't wait to hear more from you.
