Chapter 1 Response

While reading this chapter I was very intrigued to learn how great an impact a writing genre can have on what the audience takes away from it. In my high school English classes I have always been taught to write in a formal MLA essay style and only in 3rd person. The only audience that my writing has ever really received was my high school English teachers. In my experience, my teachers never gave me the opportunity to explore other genres of writing that may have improved my intended purpose. Although I was taught the effects and uses of ethos, pathos, and logos in my writing, there may be a greater impact that your piece can leave if another genre of writing is chosen. In addition to the strict genre of writing that I have been so comfortable with following, the design of the writing can also aid the audience into a better understanding of its purpose significantly. Headings and font color, type, and size not only add a unique characteristic to your writing but can also help to keep your audience engaged as well as guide them through the piece.

The knowledge that this chapter gave me helped me to get a better idea on how to not only reach my audience but to leave them with a greater impact. The introduced genres of writing presented a broader spectrum of ways that I can advance my writing choices in the future. The next time that I develop a purpose for my writing I will have an improved sense of writing genres and styles that will allow me to present my ideas in the best possible way.

  2. I totally agree with your comments about high school. I always had to follow a set rubric or template and could never include my own creativity or thoughts within my writing. I became very intrigued to use new writing styles after reading this chapter!

  4. I agree with your comment about high school! I did the same by learning how to write just to rubrics and learning the one way of writing with the purpose of not really persuading anyone but just following the given topic.

  5. I totally agree with the genre perspective. It was an interesting explanation they gave to how each genre contributes to the capturing off the audience.

  6. Hi Emily
It's great to see that you've realized that your audience in the previous texts were your teachers. I loved that you mentioned font choice, color and such. Those elements are fundamental and play a crucial role in a text. We'll read about them in the future. Awesome reading response!
