Chapter 1 Response

     Reading this first chapter has shown me many new things I did not know about writing and composing essays. In high school students were taught the basic five paragraph essay format to write the bulk of their high school essays. However, after reading this chapter i realize there are many other ways to write essays and still get the message of your essay to the audience. For example in the chapter, it gives a situation where you could use many different types of media to persuade your audience and you can chose how to construct your persuasive work. I am used to just writing the typical essay, so using different forms of media to convey my message sounds interesting.
     This first chapter also discussed the many elements to take into consideration when writing an essay. Some of these elements include: audience, design, style, and sources. These elements of writing I used in high school and composition one and two. So there were some concepts i was familiar with in this chapter, but I was also introduced to some new ones.

    I am also glad that the book points out that there are more ways to convey a message than just through a basic essay

    I also enjoyed the part of the chapter showing the different ways, regarding media, to construct a persuasive argument.

    I agree with your statement about how it's interesting to consider how you could use different forms of media to convey a message, and how it's important to think about your audience, design, style, and sources when trying to illustrate a story.

    I'm happy to see that you learned about multimodal texts and the possibility of using different modes in your writing. This course is about exploring different forms of writing and I hope this introductory chapter inspires you to be creative with your writing.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Project 2 Reflection

1)      In this essay I am most proud of the new way in which I learned to write a research paper. I was able to incorporate new writing skills into my paper that I never learned in my high school classes but will aid me in my future writing. 2)      If I had more time to work on this essay I would try to include more specific details to support my topic from a wider range of sources and provide more reasoning to support the legalization of physician assisted suicide. 3)      Peer reviews benefitted my essay the most. This is because it provided me with a lot of constructive feedback that I was able to take into consideration while editing my paper.
