Chapter one.
Writing is the way of life. It is this form of communication that makes humans so very different from the rest of the animal kingdom. Because of that, we have developed and perfected it into an art form. The Bedford Book of Genres really dives into these different forms of writing and their different components. One of the first pieces of writings displayed was Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, a memoir about a little girl growing up in Syria during the revolution and her transcendence into adulthood while bearing the memories of the past and her culture. I learned that a memoir was used because the author wanted to use real events and people to show the audience what she went through in order for you to fully understand it. This was also the case with Annie L. Burton in her memoirs about life as a slave. The first chapter really reinforced what it means to write. Telling you that before you begin its important to think of your purpose and how you will execute it. You must also think of who you are writing for, even if its for yourself. Because of all this the first chapter made me realize something i hadn't before. I had been using techniques like this before without even realizing it; writing in genres I myself did not realize. Because of all this I gained an appreciation for writing unlike before. It allowed me to come to the conclusion that although writing is important but the way it is delivered and experienced is what ties it all together. Overall the first chapter was a very informative rhetoric making me see what I had not been able to see before. I hope to write more in order to utilize the different genres we as humans have developed and perfected.
I also felt the same way in which I have used the different elements of genres in my writing without realizing it until I read this chapter. I also agree about the importance of knowing your audience when writing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the way a piece of writing is delivered and experienced is what ties it together because through the experiences the reader(s) have, they can relate to what is going on in the piece and it can also causes opinions to change. Also, the delivery of the piece drives the experiences so choosing the correct way to delivery the writing is vital in the creation of the experiences that the writer is hoping for.
ReplyDeleteHi Alexis
ReplyDeleteMore than writing, what make humans unique is verbal communication. I thought it was interesting to learn that you were using writing techniques when you didn't even realize it. I wish you had written examples of those elements as you wrote your reading response. Also, what genres were you writing in that you didn't realize? I hope to learn more from you as the semester develops.
