Shitty First Draft Response

I enjoyed the reading and found Lamott's ideas to be helpful and refreshing. Often I had approached essays and projects by jumping writing a rough draft that would be very similar to my final draft. And while I would edit and revise, the attempt to reach as close to perfection as i could first try did not produce writing that was easy to fix. But the idea to write a shitty first draft that has no fear of being graded or judged by others provides the mind with much more freedom of thought and could make writing much easier. I liked that Lamott showed how writing a shitty first draft helped her because it gave me incentive to try it myself. And it has made the writing process, which has generally been one of my least favorite processes, seem less daunting and gives me some hope that i might be able to enjoy writing, even if it is shitty. Overall i thought the article was fun to read and very helpful.

  1. I like how you pointed out that she seems carefree in her writing, because she uses that as a technique to improve her writing.

  2. Hi Logan
I'm happy that the text made you want to incorporate first drafts to your writing process and that you envision the possibility of actually enjoying writing more due to it. Can't wait to read your first draft!
