Naviagting Genre
This article was a very informal approach to investigating varying genres and the link between an authors chosen genre and the purpose of the work. Personally I usually think an author chooses what genre they write in by choosing what genre they are either most comfortable in or feel best displays their writing. However after looking into how much a single genre can vary I feel it is more the authors purpose behind the work that guides which genre they pursue in their writing. Also I never considered a thesis, or a headline a genre but rather things that are embedded into various genres. The genre of a thesis could very easily be confused with that of an introduction or even just an opening to a piece of literature could easily be confused with a thesis statement. I really like the statement “ the rules change as the genre changes,” this shows how genres and thus how writing evolves over time. For me I have always felt that writing is very rigid and come with lots of rules; so many rules I feel like I could never learn all of them, however reading how flexible and diverse each genre is, is very comforting. Also it was very interesting to learn that each genre is defined by itself in that it is defined by the works included in such genre.
I agree, the author's purpose can affect the genre of a piece and the style in which it is written
ReplyDeleteI agree, I feel like a lot of teachers portray to their students that writing is a very rigid subject when in fact writing is very "fluid" and different styles can change over time.
ReplyDeleteI also noticed plus enjoyed the informal approach to the explaining genres and I also usually think authors would pick genres based on their preferences or experience in writing and never thought about how much the authors purpose goes into the genre.
