Navigating Genre

I really liked that the essay started off with a joke. It really set a more casual tone than a textbook, which made me less opposed to continuing through it. The casual and personal tone set by the author carries through the whole essay, even while being incredibly educational. I've always found reading to be difficult when there's a sort of disconnect between the author and the audience.
I enjoyed when Dirk brought up how Washington's State of the Union Address set a precedent for those that followed, essentially creating its own genre. I've always loved talking about history and the presidents, especially George Washington.
I also liked when Dirk talked about the differences in texting, writing emails, and posting statuses on Facebook. I've always noticed that I tend to have a different approach to my wording, or the content of my message when typing something up for either of those three genres. So it's interesting to think about how others could also have this same thought process when it comes to social media and such. I completely agree with the notion that genre affects our daily lives in more ways than we realize.
