Navigating Genres Reading Response

The initial entry into the essay offered a light-hearted beginning as it progressed. The joke regarding country music, and the stereotypes it brings truly is universally known from where I come from, so I was able to chuckle to myself and continue reading. As the author of the article went deeper into the understanding of genres, many examples were used to accurately support and express the arguments that were being made. One particular reference that I related to was mentioned when discussing how something always has a first response, which then influences the responses to come after. A reference to Presidential Speeches was then made, as it was explained how George Washington’s first Presidential Speech set the tone for the ones to follow.  I related to this in the sense that when I am writing a particular essay pertaining to a certain genre, it is helpful to view other essays from the same or similar genre to see the language and format used. Many of my English teachers frowned upon this exact action stating how it was, “cheating” or influencing our writing too much, but how else would I have appropriately completed the assignment without knowing how to properly fall under that specific genre. Overall, the reading was very helpful in conveying how being educated on the genre you are writing makes all the difference.

  1. I agree with you that, when writing, viewing other works in that same genre helps a lot because it gives you the sense of how the piece is supposed to be written. I also agree that teachers are strict with this because my teachers always frowned on the same things. I felt that they didn't allow us to unleash our potential because they were limiting us by not letting us explore similar writings in order to get ideas.

  2. I also agree that it is helpful to look at examples of previous writing in a certain genre to better understand and write more effectively in that genre.
