Navigating Genres Response

“Navigating Genres” by Kerry Dirk is a very easy and informative read. It flows very nicely, and it has the same tone of the essay that we had last week called “Shitty First Drafts”. Personally, I have never thought too much about genre when it comes to my writing because I usually just spit out what ever comes to my mind if it applies to the prompt. So this article helped to make me a little less ignorant of what genre is and why it is important. I can imagine how hard it must be to forced into a box that is genre when it comes to writing. One thing that this essay helped me understand is that genre is more fluid than most of us think. Genre is every where and it is almost apart of everything. Genre is how you converse with someone and how you respond to life. Genre doesn’t put you in a box, genre forms around your words and how you do things. I was also surprised with how the light sense of humor used really made me get through reading this paper quickly, and I didn’t even dread it that much. I enjoyed the part about the ransom letter because it conveyed a meaning and it made me laugh. I also like the part about thesis statements, and how there isn’t a correct formula for making them. This made a lot of sense to me because I was always taught to make my thesis statements differently from one teacher to the next. This confused me a lot when I was younger, but now I can see that there are a million ways to make a thesis statement. Genre is a very broad thing, and there is no one correct way to label something.

  1. I agree that this article opened my eyes as to why genre is important in our writing. I feel like after reading this article I now have a better understanding of genre as it applies to more than just the words we are putting down on paper.

  2. I agree with you about thesis statements. In high school, my teachers only taught us one way to create a thesis statement. However, there are many ways you can write a thesis statement and it depends on what kind of genre you are using.

  3. This article opened my eyes as well, I did not know how many ways there were to think of writing, genre, audience, and types of rhetoric.

  4. I completely agree on this idea that genre is a much broader aspect than I originally thought. Everything cannot be categorized as school made it seem.
