Navigating Genres
The essay "Navigating Genres," by Kerry Dirk was a very well written and easily readable piece. Dirk's rhetorical method of starting off with a joke to pull the readers in is an excellent way to get her audience interested in what she is about to start talking about. In other words, she truly considered her audience of students that are new to English composition. She successfully intrigued her audience talking about country music; yes, some people may not like country music, however everyone understands what country music is and what it consists of. Dirk's use of rhetoric is exceptional, she uses all of ethos, logos, and pathos in this excerpt. An excellent use of ethos used in this excerpt is when she stated that she "has written letters, nonfiction pieces, scholarly articles, rants, etc." This author also personally connects with the audience by writing about herself, and how she had some trouble while writing, like us students do. The way this author also speaks can really connect the audience to this reading. The author uses vocabulary a seventh grader would use, which is definitely a good thing considering the fact that juvenile language can really connect an audience of highschoolers and college freshmen. Overall this excerpt was very well written and explained subjects in an easily understandable way.
I also felt that her language made her essay very easy and interesting to read. It was also helpful that she was giving us her advice by implementing it herself.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the tone of the essay made it very fun to read, and that the way the author speaks really connects to the audience.
