Navigating Genres

After reading "Navigating Genres" I have more information on what the different types of genres actually encompass. There is much more than the standard forms of writing and this will positively impact my writing in the future. Have the different authors input was helpful in the sense that I can freely write without needing to know my form prior to the paper. There are so many types of genres that writing has such a broad potential. I also appreciated the fact that I know there has already been responses created for genres and all other works of that form stem from that first statement made my a previous author. This piece was an easy read because it was engaging with the examples and the other author input. The length was longer than essays I'm use to reading but it was a topic I needed to know about and that kept me interested the whole way.

    The commentary pertaining to form also helped me, seeing that I always stress the form of my paper for more time than need be.

    I completely agree with your comment that genres are broad. I feel that this article helped establish that point, making us become more at ease when we complete a writing assignment.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Project 2 Reflection

1)      In this essay I am most proud of the new way in which I learned to write a research paper. I was able to incorporate new writing skills into my paper that I never learned in my high school classes but will aid me in my future writing. 2)      If I had more time to work on this essay I would try to include more specific details to support my topic from a wider range of sources and provide more reasoning to support the legalization of physician assisted suicide. 3)      Peer reviews benefitted my essay the most. This is because it provided me with a lot of constructive feedback that I was able to take into consideration while editing my paper.
