Shitty First Draft Response

This article took a very interesting view on the the way to draft an essay. In high school, I was always taught to write one first draft as a rough draft, and then after that draft I would usually write my final draft. The author of this article, Anne Lamott, says to write 3 drafts. The first draft as she explained is not supposed to be perfect, but rather writing anything that comes to your mind so that you can have something down to edit and revise for the second draft. This surprised me, as I usually take forever to write a first draft because I am constantly tying to make it perfect so I don't have to revise it much in the second draft. In Lamott's second draft, she says to fix up your ideas and make them more accurate and precise. In the third and final draft, everything should be cleaned up and ideas and sentences flow smoothly. I agree with the author on her process of drafting a good essay. Her writing process seems more appealing than the way i was taught in high school. In my future essays i will try to use Lamott's writing process so that i can revise and perfect my essays.

  1. I have a similar problem writing, where it takes me forever to write even my first draft. And I agree with your statement about Lamott's process being a lot more appealing.

  2. Hi Sean
I wish you had focus more on your writing process and if the text has inspired you or not to try something different and why you would like to do so and the benefits that kind of writing could bring to you.
