Shitty First Drafts

Shitty First Drafts

After reading the article about shitty first drafts, I feel more motivated to actually check over my writing. I have never revised any of my essays unless it was mandatory for class. I feel that after reading this article I have a better understanding of how to improve my writing. In Highschool the teachers never focused on the importance of writing rough drafts. I was always given a deadline to finish the paper by the end of class. Now that I understand the impact that revising my paper can have on my writing, I feel much more determined to write the rough drafts for this class. Reading this article helped me realize that writing is a slow process that needs to be thought out, that it can not be completed in one sitting.

I feel that a large beneficial piece of the article was the emphasis the author put on the fact that many famous and well-skilled authors revise rough drafts constantly. It also seemed that many of the authors mentioned did not fantasize about writing, it was more of a chore for them that they excelled in. Knowing this I am able to feel more confident about my writing and what I can accomplish through revision periods. This article helped open my mind to the idea of rough drafts and the concept that a rough draft will never be perfect.

  1. I am agree that often in high school checking my writing was either not encouraged or we were not given the appropriate time to write a first draft, however after reading this article it will be a priority in college.

  2. I agree that teachers always set deadlines for papers too close to when they were assigned and they never allowed you the time to go back and enhance the writing. They never encouraged the use of rough drafts because they were too busy preparing us for the timed exams and they never really taught strategies to revise our drafts. I also agree that, with this, checking over your writing was never really encouraged because everything was focused on quantity and time versus quality.

  3. I agree with what you said as well, the importance of revising and checking your first draft and second drafts was not stressed in high school. After reading this article i see the benefits of revising and going over multiple drafts.

  4. Hi Garret,
Even though some people may enjoy writing, it is definitely a skill that can be developed if worked on. I believe you're right when you say writing is a slow process. Many people hate it because it's slow. But hopefully we'll be able to enjoy this process and make the most of it.
