First Draft

When you barely know what the topic is, it can be quite difficult to start writing. That was one of my biggest problems. I simply did not know where to start or even an idea of what i should write when i first sat down. This first draft was in essence, trash. I would write a paragraph and rewrite it because it felt wrong. I would simply write all of my ideas as they came into my head. In the end i had some incoherent piece of writing which i later tried to rearrange to make some sort of sense. This was just like when reading "shitty first drafts". The woman being that she wrote it in a light, comical manner made it seem easy, it was not.I hope to get other peoples opinions in order to help me better my essay. More drafts are definitely needed.

    I felt the same way. I had no idea what to write about and when I thought I did, the topic wasn't strong enough. I had to also rewrite most of my paragraphs over again because I was all over the place.

    I agree with you in that choosing a topic with enough information to write about was difficult. I also need to make revisions and write another draft in order to fully accomplish what I want to.

    I had a hard time getting started too, so I made an outline which helped me proceed. It's good that you just wrote down your ideas! There will be time to clean it up in newer drafts

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Project 2 Reflection

1)      In this essay I am most proud of the new way in which I learned to write a research paper. I was able to incorporate new writing skills into my paper that I never learned in my high school classes but will aid me in my future writing. 2)      If I had more time to work on this essay I would try to include more specific details to support my topic from a wider range of sources and provide more reasoning to support the legalization of physician assisted suicide. 3)      Peer reviews benefitted my essay the most. This is because it provided me with a lot of constructive feedback that I was able to take into consideration while editing my paper.
