Writing my First Draft

Creating my first draft was more difficult than I expected it to be going in.  I had to keep reminding myself not to summarize.  I have a hard time getting to the “so what?” part of my points.  I also found it hard to write an 800-word essay knowing that I will be increasing the word count in my next draft. I felt like I had to write incomplete ideas so that I would have enough to work with later. I am used to writing drafts that are roughly the same length as the final draft.
I did not really feel like my experience was similar to what I read in “Shitty First Drafts” because I did not feel like I was able to ramble on carelessly. I had to stay focused so as not to go off on a tangent in my writing. While writing this draft I was thinking about my classmates and my professor reading it.  I also knew that if I let myself just go with whatever came into my head I would get very off topic.

  1. I also found it hard to write 800 words, knowing I would have to double this word count later on. I didn't want to hit every point but I also didn't wanna leave anything out.

  2. I also found myself always checking to see if I had got to 800 words and wondering how I can expand my first draft into such a longer paper.

  3. I thought of shitty first drafts too, it definitely helped me finish the essay
