Chapter 5 Response

In chapter five, when talking about brainstorming for ideas for topics to write about, it says that it is important on sharing your ideas with others.  To be quite honest, I have never really shared my ideas about writings with other people besides my teacher/professor, which really is not the greatest.  I have noticed that after reading this passage, that it would be very beneficial to get together with people and talk about different topics that you had in mind, and bounce ideas off of each other.  Some other ways to brainstorm, stated in this chapter, that can be beneficial to your writing is making a list from most importance to least importance, freewriting, and mind mapping.  Next the chapter starts talking about doing preliminary research, like defining terms that you may not understand, finding multiple opinions on the topic, deciding which side you are on, etc.  Whenever I do a research paper, I always assume that the reader does not know what I'm talking about when it comes to more detail oriented subjects.  It is always good to include explanations and definitions in your papers.

  1. I am the same way when it comes to sharing my topics and/or ideas. I typically only consult with the professor, because they are the one grading the assignment, however after reading this chapter I realize how beneficial it would be to get more opinions.

  2. I think all the steps before beginning your paper that the book describes can be very helpful in improving the quality of your paper because it helps you to have a sense of direction for your paper.

  3. I too never really share my ideas with any other people besides the professor, but this chapter showed me how to benefit from peer advice.
