Navigating Genre
This was a very interesting article discussing genre. I found Dirk's view on genre very interesting as it differed from mine. I was taught that there are many different types of genres and that you must write in one of them. Dirk had several different thoughts on genre throughout the article which made me rethink how a genre is defined and how to apply a genre. Dirk mentioned how one must know how genre shapes our everyday lives, and how to use genre in the right context. One example Dirk used was comparing how someone responds to a professor when writing something, and then how someone responds to a friend when writing about something. Dirk also mentioned that genre can be changed to apply to certain situations. I liked the example she gave of the State of the Union address, and how that once that genre was made future presidents now know what to say in the State of the Union address and how it should be orated. Once one situation is addressed such as making the first State of the Union address, those who need to perform a similar task can use others past responses to help shape their own. After reading this article I have a new outlook on genre and how it can be used effectively.
