Navigating Genres Response

Navigating Genres helped me to better understand genres as the apply to formal writing as well as to everyday life. I never thought about the extent to which genres encompass. Things as simple as texts can even have different genres depending on who the sender and receiver are. So in this way I enjoyed the article and what it taught me about genre and form. I think it will help the way I approach my writing. I thought the the author's use of other sources were a good addition to the article and helped to make certain arguments more clear and even funny or interesting at times. I think the author effectively gave her message in a way that was easy for students to understand and be interested in, which shows her understanding of genres and adds to her ethos. I did think that at times the author may have elaborated a little more than was necessary, but this did not ruin the article for me and I believe I got a lot out of it.

    I also like how the author used very relatable sources or examples to explain the point of the essay as well as to help students, like myself, understand genres and how they are used daily.

    The multiple examples were also helpful for me. I agree though that it was a little more elaborate than necessary, but it was definitely worth reading

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea.
