After reading Navigating Genres, I feel much more comfortable in approaching writing with a completely different style. With a better understanding of the various styles that one single genre can encompass, I am more confident in approaching writing freely without any set format. I think that the author was very effective in delivering her message to the audience. The tone that she used helped to convey a sense of friendship without carrying an academic stigma behind it. Although the article was rather long, the author's style of writing and delivery made it an easy and fun read. I also enjoyed the humorous aspects that she included within the essay. These humorous aspects helped to create an outlet that effectively explained the lesson the author was teaching. I found the idea of the author opens up the concept that not all writing pieces will fit into a genre perfectly and that it was normal for the composition to hold its own individual aspect. I feel that the author was successful in delivering her message to the audience in a fun and entertaining way.

    I agree that the author delivered this piece to her audience in a fun way but at the same time informed us of useful tips and information about genres.

    I agree with you on how this article will make me look at writing differently. Also, I agree that the humor in this essay makes the author's point easy to understand.

    The humor definitely made the article much easier to read and understand. Its great how she used this to create a genre that would help students understand what genres are.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea.
