Chapter 5

I thought that this chapter was especially helpful for me in the fact that we will be writing this paper. During the writing process of our last paper, I feel it could have been better to get all pertinent information (library resources) before having to start the first draft. Now I know that the first step is going to be researching my possible interests, and I am especially interested in making a mind map, as I feel like it is an accurate representation of how my brain functions.  Personally, I think this process might help me to find a narrower idea, as most of the things I find arguable and interesting are widely debated already.  Additionally, committing to a single idea to me is imperative. In some of my previous writings, I tended to have so many ideas that they all got shoved into one paper, and I would be worried about having too much going on. The section about formulating a research proposal is perfect, because as it turns out I have never had to compose one before.

    I'm also thinking that mind mapping will be helpful! It would have been nice to have this sooner I agree

    I agree with you that researching your interests first will be helpful. Therefore, you can pick a topic that won't make you bored.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea.
