Chapter 7 Response

   The most helpful section of chapter 7 for me was the section detailing when to paraphrase rather than quote. In high school I was always taught to directly quote the article then go into an in-depth analysis that often included paraphrasing, never to solely paraphrase a source. Paraphrasing can help with the flow of a piece which is an area that I often struggle with. These examples helped to show me how I can properly integrate sources. However some of this chapter was very repetitive in that it discussed a lot of things that we have talked about multiple times in class. Overall this was a helpful chapter and reinforced many of the things we have discussed in class.

    I agree that some of this chapter had repetitive information within the chapter but also some of the same information from class, but it was helpful to see how to implement the things we learned in class into our writing.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea. I like that she included songs that help her study, or can be helpful for studying. Music does tend to affect a person mood, so it was an interesting genre alteration.
