Chapter 7

     Chapter 7 is very informative.  I feel like even though I’ve been taught most of the things chapter 7 goes over, I still gained knowledge and a better understanding of most of the topics because it does a good job of explaining and giving examples.  I have never been very confident in my ability to summarize so reading the strategies that chapter 7 suggested was enlightening.  I appreciated how it explained summarizing as beginning with a general statement and then adding supporting lines.  The chapter also had a lot of beneficial suggestions for correctly citing sources and paraphrasing without plagiarizing.  I feel that high school sufficiently prepared me for this because I was always warned about plagiarism and how to avoid it, but I do feel that this chapter did a good job of going over how to accurately use sources.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea. I like that she included songs that help her study, or can be helpful for studying. Music does tend to affect a person mood, so it was an interesting genre alteration.
