Chapter 1 response
When reading this chapter I found it to be helpful schema to have throughout this course. I agreed with what the author said in terms of, I have always been told what to write and I never think of the different variations on how I could carry out an assignment. Having this knowledge before diving into the course will open up the possibilities on how I choose to look at and carry out certain assessments. Although this does provide helpful information I was also slightly lost only because I did not know all the different angles to look at a paper, it's not just black and white writing, its much more and gives one the opportunity to expand their writing further than imagined. This in mind, it makes me reflect on the papers I wrote in high school and how the teachers outlined them as a five paragraph essays with eight to ten sentences each. The chapter kind of puts that thought to rest and explains how there is no one set way to write, its just however the writer feels it acceptable.
Having this as a tool to go back to in the future and refer to when I am writing will continue to help me and my writing. The examples in the text are easy to understand and follow and will create a nice guideline for me to follow and broaden my horizon while writing the upcoming papers in this course. Overall, this chapter was beneficial and will help me throughout the course of this semester.

I agree with you that this chapter also made me reflect on my papers from high school. My teachers constantly enforced that five paragraph essays were the only way to write.
ReplyDeleteThe chapter also helped me understand that there is not set format on how to write. I think this chapter will help my writing improve as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI one hundred percent agree, throughout my whole life I was always told to write in a five paragraph essay format, which got a little confusing when it came to writing stories. However, now writing makes a lot more sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI was also very intrigued when the chapter introduced the idea that one piece of writing can have so many varied purposes. I have been so used to thinking that my writing is made for one specific purpose.
ReplyDeleteThe chapter did change my perspective on genre and writing format. My general view of academic writing mostly involved five paragraph essays and research papers, whereas it is really much broader and can be more accommodating to certain topics and purposes.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you about reflecting back on high school as I always had to follow specific guidelines and templates in order to pass. This chapter was able to allow me to think of various ideas that would enhance my own writing styles for future assignments.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that previously knowing the various topics can be extremely beneficial for any writer, regardless of how much experience he or she has.
ReplyDeleteHi Hailey
ReplyDeleteIt brings me great joy to see that the reading allowed you to look back on the writing you've done in the past and realize that there are other ways to approach a text. An you're right, this chapter is about going through the basics and keeping them in mind when we actually get to do some writing. You brought up great points in your reflection!
