Chapter 1
Not very much of this information was new, but it doesn't hurt to brush up. It talks about genre and explains how Burton's memoirs were meant to reach a certain audience using methods that were popular at the time, which makes the reader consider how genre has changed over time (it mentions she may have used a documentary if she'd lived during a different time). Author's purposes, audience, and rhetorical situations play a role in the genre choice, which I believe is useful information for future papers.
It then goes on to introduce the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) and modes, which are how audiences come into contact with a composition (ex: text-based, visual, audio), as well as media (delivery method of compositions to audiences), which can be print, digital, in person, etc. I found it interesting how the book rattles off different platforms from which authors can reach their audiences, such as blogs, which I normally don't see referenced in textbooks.
The chapter also explains how genre is affected by convention and lists off some other influential categories, which I think are definitely important to know.
Overall, it's kind of a dry chapter and really just serves as an introduction to the rest of the book.

I agree with your opinion that this was a rather dry, boring chapter.
ReplyDeleteHi Julie
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see you noticed the insertion of modern genres like blogging on this chapter. New genres introduced by technology should be taken into consideration as they are currently part of our society. I'm happy this was more of a revision to you and that you already hold this knowledge.
