First Draft Reflection

Creating my first draft for project one was not that difficult. The hardest thing for me was choosing what to write about. I went back and forth between a bunch of narratives trying to decide which one I could write the best on. Once I finally decided on a narrative, I had to decide what about the narrative to analyze. This was tricky too because I wanted to be able to write a clear and concise paper that reflected the project requirements. It was kind of a similar experience to what I thought after reading “Shitty First Drafts”. I kept my first draft more polished than the author of the article was suggesting. Mine was similar in that I just put my thoughts on the paper even if it didn’t sound quite right the first time. Since the first draft had a word requirement/maximum, I did not just spew out ideas not caring if it would be deleted later. I tried to keep in mind the fact that this wasn’t the final draft and that I can add on and revise later, this being said it was still harder for me to create a “shitty first draft” because it isn’t my intention to write “shitty”, especially not in an academic paper.

  1. I agree that choosing a topic was hard! I probably spent more time deciding which two pieces to use than I did writing the essay. I also agree that when we are turning in these early drafts, we still want them to be close to our best work rather than at all "shitty."

  2. I also went through several different topics before deciding which to write on. I ended up picking which one was more interesting to write about for me and which I knew more about.
