Navigating Genre Response
The author, Kerry Dirk, starts her essay off by explaining how she researched this new genre that she was about to write. This is interesting because she uses her personal experience to elaborate on this idea for her readers. She constantly engages her readers by using her personal experiences and explains them in an informal tone. She even uses her own essay as an example to explain how she is exploring this new genre in which she tries to give advice to the college student writer. One of the most relatable parts of the essay, for me, was when Dirk explains that usually when someone starts a writing piece they feel like they need to follow set 'rules' of a genre, similarly to "filling in the blanks". For me, this was very relatable because I have always felt the need to write in a certain pattern to fit a genre, especially because of the ways my past teachers have taught me when learning to write a new genre. She explains that writers don't have to follow the assumed patterns of writing a certain genre, Dirk says that writers have the freedom to develop on a genre and create their own path. I found this idea very interesting because while it is a seemingly obvious and simple concept it had never been something that I thought about. It gives me the ability to write more freely no matter what genre I choose to write in.
I also found Dirk's approach to genre interesting. It is definitely more enjoyable and easy to write when you don't worry about not straying too far from the conventional rules of a specific genre.
