Navigating Genres - Amiyah Lytle
Navigating Genres is an essay that discusses how to identify certain rhetorical situations and how to approach these situations. For example, in the essay, she uses a comparison that we recognize certain rhetorical situations in our lives and act accordingly, such as emailing a professor or updating on Facebook. This essay really focuses in on the aspect that being aware of genres can help you when writing pieces. General genre awareness can help serve as a guide for your particular rhetorical situation.
Personally, I really enjoyed how she used the country music reference in the beginning. This allowed for me to connect and relate to the essay. I also really liked the informality of the essay as she mentions. Kerry Dirk uses a lot of common and relatable situations to express her ideas in relation to genre and rhetorical situations. Dirk uses the example of rhetorical objects to explain that we subconsciously understand that certain situations will elicit different responses. Specifically, she uses the difference between picking a chick flick or a horror movie. I found it particularly interesting with all the different considerations with genre. For example, the fact that there can be vastly different pieces that all fall under the same category. In my perspective, this makes navigating through genres, as well as structuring them for your rhetorical purpose, a bit difficult.
Overall from Navigating Genres, I learned a few key tips. The first tip I learned is to be familiar with the genres. This is important because it allows to you understand and better construct your words to achieve the desires response out of your readers. Kerry Dirk also supplies some suggestions at the end of her essay that have honestly opened my view on writing a bit. For my first project, I will take more time to answer the specific rhetorical situation questions that I have been overlooking in the past.

I agree with you in that, by using very relatable situations, Dirk was able to convey her point about genres. I agree with you also that navigating through genres is a lot more difficult now that we know more about genres.
