Navigating Genres Response
Kerry Dirk’s article did frustrate me because
I feel that I have to be more aware of the genre I choose to write in as well as
the particular situation I am writing for. The article, however, does allow me
to realize that I don’t have to create a different genre for each writing, and that I can use preexisting genres to help me choose how to address certain situations.
Before, I did not pay close attention to genres because I was more focused on
completing the basic steps of an essay which were stating your thesis, topic
sentences for each body paragraph, evidence to support my thesis, and
conclusion. I never focused on genre because it was not emphasized in my high
school English classes. Now, I feel that English courses in college focus on
many different elements within writing, and genre is now element that I am
learning more about to help improve my writing skills.
I agree that getting used to using different genres rather than just using a basic essay is definitely going to be an adjustment
ReplyDeleteIts going to be an adjustment but it think it could be fun. Writing the same boring style is grilling sometimes. Im excited to see something different.
ReplyDeleteI also in high school mainly focused on the prompt of what I was writing rather than what genre I was writing in and hope to change this in college.
ReplyDeleteI can completely agree that it was usually very easy to look past the specific genres and simply focus on the basic steps of an essay, but I feel like it's good for us to expand out horizons and think differently than we would normally.
ReplyDeleteI also used to not pay attention to genres and learned in high school to focus on the structure of an essay and I have also noticed how much in college that there are other elements within writing to focus on which will improve writing skills.
