Navigating genres response

I found this article very interesting and relatable. I rarely think about the genres I use every single day. Whether it is texting my mom, emailing my professor, talking to my boss, or even writing in this blog, I don’t have to think about what genre to use because I am already familiar with it. However, when I receive an assignment in a genre I am not used to, I also look up examples online so I can figure out how it is formatted and what the tone of voice is.
I really relate to this article when it states the “writing rules” we have learned in school such as “You must have a thesis statement at the end of the introduction”, “Every thesis should have three points”, and “You cannot use “I” when writing.” I found this extremely entertaining because this was exacting what my teachers drilled in my head throughout high school. However, what they did not tell us is how these “rules” only pertain to certain genres like academic writing.

Overall, this article gave me a better understanding of genres and the acceptable ways to write in them.

Comments

  1. I agree that I almost never think about the genres I use in my daily life. I like that you look up examples online to familiarize yourself, I may have to try that for myself for this course.

  3. I also found the quoted text amusing, seeing that those exact words were expressed to me in the same way. I now know those "rules" don't pertain to all genres of writing.

  5. I relate to this. I, myself, also research and familiarize myself with examples if I'm assigned a task in a genre I do not know.
