"Navigating Genres" Response

Navigating Genres, by Kerry Dirk, highlights the idea that genres are apparent in our everyday lives, even when they are unrecognizable.  For instance, genres never come to my mind when I am sending an email or texting my friends.  Dirks personal, comical, and quirky approaches captivates us, her audience of young college students, to engage in her dissection of the term genre.  I found her comment that genres are used “primarily to form” intriguing because it sends the message that genres are always evolving and our tones and responses towards certain topics are the reasons for this development.  We can relate this change to that of a domino effect as reflected in the statement “another person uses the first response as a basis for the second.”
Additionally, I found Dirk’s article to be quite relatable and informative as she provided examples that were easy to understand, such as the ransom notes, making the article seem much shorter and more interesting.  Overall, Dirk’s article has provided me with more knowledge over genres and its usage in our day-to-day lives.

  1. I agree with you that Dirk's article help readers to understand that genres are used in everyday life and genres can be reused to help address different situations.
