Shitty First Drafts

For most of my writing career, I was so focused on perfecting the first draft because I treated the first draft as the final draft. I, however, experienced writer’s block as a result of trying to perfect my first draft because I would think critically about each detail to write in my paper rather than putting down my thoughts on the paper. Recently, I have learned to just accept the fact that my first draft does not have to be spot-on. Last spring, I read Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts” for ENC 1101, and it helped me with improving my approach to writing first drafts. Now, I truly realize that writing is a process and that perfection piece of writing is not going to happen in one step.

  1. I can definitely relate to your comment about completely focusing on the first draft. The middle and high school curriculum made it quite difficult to have the freedom to revise and perfect our own work. Therefore, I am partially excited to have that opportunity now to thoroughly analyze and rewrite my work.

  2. Hi Ke'yana
It's good to know that you had already read the text previously. However, I wish you had expanded on aspects of the text you thought were interesting, if you invest on shitty first drafts or not, and why. And if since you started writing first drafts you texts improved or not, and how they improved.
