Writing My First Draft

Prior to writing my first draft, I did not feel compelled, but rather a little overwhelmed to begin the writing process for this project.  I have to say writing the introduction was the hardest part because this was where I was going to establish my goals and tone for the essay.  Therefore, I needed to ensure that my complete thoughts were contained within these few sentences.  Once I finished writing the introduction, I became more inclined to write my analysis since I was in my own "writing zone."  After completing my first draft, I have to say I felt a sense of accomplishment as this process became very tedious at times.

On the other hand, the article “Shitty Drafts” provided more of a comedic outlook towards writing the first draft, as it states to let your words just “pour out” and “romp all over the place.”  Personally, I did not find this the case when writing my first draft because I wanted to ensure my thoughts were consistent and coherent.  Therefore, I did find myself re-reading my paragraphs several times, not only to create new ideas, but to make sure these ideas were thorough.  Thus, I do agree with Lamott’s explanation that if you keep reading your first draft you will find areas within it to enhance.

  3. Starting it is definitely one of the biggest challenges. Just like you when i get a good introduction the rest just seems to flow.
