"Annoying Ways People Use Sources"

“Annoying Ways People Use Sources,” by Kyle D. Stedman, explains the routine mistakes people make when embedding citations within their essays, as well as, advice on how to fix these simple mistakes. I found Stedman’s explanation on how to properly insert quotations within an essay extremely helpful and relatable because it allowed me to acknowledge my own mistakes when embedding quotes. Thus, his examples used to demonstrate the idea of “Prepare. Quote. Analyze.” further recognized the importance quoting properly has within one’s essay, such that it adds coherency and rhythm to an essay. Personally, I found this advice to be beneficial because I can incorporate this technique within my own essays without feeling that the quotation was randomly placed within the essay. My senior year AICE Literature class provided me with some background in embedding citations, but after reading this article I think my understanding about implanting quotations has been enhanced because I was never taught to “prepare” the audience for a quote. Therefore, the information I gained from Stedman’s article will help me organize citations within my own research correctly.

  1. I agree. Being able to prepare the audience for a quote really helped improve the paper. Remembering that real people are reading what you wrote makes it a whole lot easier.
