The chapter was very helpful in explaining when its is appropriate to quote or paraphrase text in order to have a very effective paper. It was helpful to see the examples because it showed how to paraphrase and quote a text as well as properly citing the source. I glad that the end of the chapter shows examples of how to cite different sources in MLA because I will be able to cite my sources properly when writing my paper since the chapter has information on citations. I think the chapter will help me during writing my paper when I am thinking about how to fit certain quotes in my essay in order to support my thesis. Now, I feel more comfortable with paraphrasing because I was worried that I might be plagiarizing if I did not include direct quotations from a source. The chapter, however, made me realize how I still can make my writing effective with paraphrasing and using quotes when needed.

    I found the end of the chapter to be quite beneficial, as well. I have always had a little difficulty when writing bibliographies in the past so having these examples of the various formats will make it easier when citing our sources.

    I agree that the chapter helped me realize that that writing can be effective with paraphrasing because I always felt that direct quotes were the most effective way to support an argument but now I realize that paraphrasing can be just as effective if done correctly.

    Personally, this chapter was a review of previous knowledge. However, I agree on the aspect that the chapter helped you understand the right type of quote to use in supporting your thesis.

    I also thought this chapter provided guidance on distinguishing between when to quote and when to paraphrase.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea.
