Chapter 5 Reading Response- Taylor Wilhelmy

This chapter is all about coming up with a research question, about how to write a proposal and it gave an introduction into organizing sources. Before I read this chapter, I never thought of coming up with a research question as being this detailed. Before, I used to just look up something that I felt interested in and that was it. I would come up with a question from there. Now, by reading this chapter, I now know that there is more to this process. I had never thought before to have other people provide their opinions on your potential research topic. Also, I had never thought about asking myself questions as I did research. When I conduct research, I usually just look for things that stand out and I remember them. I also don't usually brainstorm before writing because I had never thought about doing t hat before. In terms of the proposal, I haven't really had to do one before. I did one for a research paper this past year but it wasn't very detailed. Our proposal consisted of a research question and that was about it. Now I know that a proposal includes a research question, a working title, a summary which has your topic and a description of what we will be looking for, key terms and more questions, a description of the purpose and a discussion of key challenges you may face. By now knowing what a true proposal looks like, I will be able to implement this in the future for classes other than English.

  1. I also had never thought of having a research question be the focal part of research projects. I also have never done a proposal.

  2. I absolutely agree with you because I have not had much experience with research papers. This chapter taught me how in depth a proposal and its components can really be, mentioning certain aspects that I never thought of before.
