Chapter 5 Response

Chapter 5 provided me with a lot of useful information to aid me in beginning stages of the research process. This reading was just deeper explanations of topics covered in class on Tuesday. The text suggests to google my topic but stay focused, this reminded me to use the database portals through the library website to get accurate, accredited sources. Key terms can be used to search in these databases. I have never written an argumentative research paper. My research paper’s in high school were more informative essays. This research paper is going to be different for me because I get to choose something that I am interested in to write about as opposed to a predetermined topic papers that I wrote in high school. It is going to be important for me to note why I want to pursue this topic and project in the topic proposal. To stay more engaged in the writing and research process, I need to articulate the reasons why this research matters to me.
 During a research project, I learned that it is important to consider my rhetorical situation. Also, something unique in this text is how it explores how genre matters in research. For example, different modes and medians of sources and the design. In high school, I only did one research paper that involved an annotated bibliography. I remember it being a pain to do and seemed unnecessary. But after reading this chapter I now realize that working bibliographies and annotated bibliographies are important for evaluating how dependable each source is and for specific examples and important evidence. Overall, this reading provided me with valid information and examples to make me feel more confident in beginning a research project.

    I have not had much experience writing research papers either. On the bright side, this chapter gave great examples on the research process, making me become less worried about the whole process.

"Navigating Genres" by Kerry Dirk makes you really think about what a genre is. Whenever I thought about genres, I always thought of it as the type of writing that is being created. All throughout school, we were taught that a genre was used to describe a novel such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. I never really thought of a piece of writing having a genre but now, after reading Dirk's piece, I now realize that writing does have a genre. Dirk also points out that genres are used to help people accomplish a goal. I never thought a genre could do that. I always thought it was used to just categorize novels or short stories but, now that I have read this piece, I now realize that genres are important because, if you write in the wrong genre, the message that you want to portray can come across completely differently then you had intended. Taylor   I really liked the video that Taylor made because it was a good visual representation for people who don’t like football. Personally, I like football, so I think it is necessary to have more research done for the players wellbeing. Sarah I really liked how Sarah chose such a relevant topic to today’s times. I really liked her journal entries because it showed how much a person is affected by others. No one should be judged based on their gender. Luke B I really like that he used a survey because it gave a semi accurate representation of the people here. I think it’s really funny that he chose the topic of makeup because most of the girls here always are done up. Kathryn The Spotify playlist was a very unique idea.
