Chapter 7 reading response

Chapter 7 focuses on quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Going into this chapter I already had an in depth understanding of these topics due to writing research and other papers in my high school advanced English classes. I did find a few points interesting though. Such as, giving context for quotes and giving the reader a heads-up about the quote that follows. Also the point that a piece of paraphrased work should be almost the same length as the original. I have had trouble in the past with summarizing pieces of information in a source, especially if the source is long. I found it helpful when the chapter said to summarize by starting with a general statement then move on to supporting ideas. Summaries also have to be fully your own words, but should still be cited accordingly. In high school, we had a plagiarism detection software that we submitted our pieces through. This gave me a strong base knowledge on how to properly cite the information in my paper to avoid plagiarism. Overall, this chapter was an effective way for me to brush up on my knowledge of quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing.

  2. I too find the summarizing info to be very informative and helpful. I never really had a clear idea of how to summarize large info either.
